Hen Party Ideas in Athens: a Private Pizza Workshop

A hen party in Athens that is not another bar crawl. Your group of 6 to 20 takes over our workshop in Kerameikos, splits into teams and makes Neapolitan pizza from 72-hour dough. The bride judges. Drinks, a DJ and the gallery floor afterwards are optional. Stag dos get the same treatment.

Most hen party ideas in Athens come down to the same three things: a boat, a bar, a rooftop. None of them give the group something to do together that is not drinking. A pizza workshop does. Everyone has flour on their hands, and the bride gets to be unfair about who wins.

Knack & Snack is a pizzeria with an art gallery underneath, at Persefonis 7 in Kerameikos. The oven is the restaurant's own, the instructors are the night-shift pizzaioli, and the dough has fermented for 72 hours before you touch it. The room is yours for the session, or the whole evening.

Hen, bachelorette or stag, the format is the same: a private session for 6 to 20 adults, a contest between teams, and the person getting married as the judge. Most groups fly in for the weekend, so the practical section is longer than usual.

Why a pizza workshop works for a hen do in Athens

A hen do has a structure problem: a group that may not know each other, one person to celebrate, and a long day to fill. The pizza workshop solves the first two and a half hours. A task, teams, and a result you eat. By the time the pizzas come out, the group has settled.

It fits around the rest of the day. The session is 2.5 hours. Do it at 13:00 and the evening is free. Do it at 19:00 and stay on the gallery floor until the restaurant closes at 01:00. Nobody needs a change of clothes, just something that can take flour.

How the session runs: the pizza contest

Aprons go on, drinks go out if you booked the package. The pizzaiolo shows the group how to stretch a dough ball by hand: the slap, the turn, the edge. Everyone has a go. The first base is usually a mess. The second one is the one you keep, top and bake for yourself.

Then the contest. We split the group into teams of three or four. Each team builds one pizza from the bench: San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte, basil, and whatever else is out. The oven takes 90 seconds per pizza, so the clock is real. The bride or groom judges, by their own rules: looks, taste, which team sang loudest. Winners get the first slices.

  • Teams of three or four, named by the group
  • One contest pizza per team, plus the pizza each guest makes alone
  • The bride or groom judges, criteria of their choosing
  • Dessert to finish, if you have booked it

Bachelorette party Athens: who it suits, from 6 to 20

Minimum six, maximum twenty. Six is a close group of friends. Twenty is the whole wedding party plus cousins. Both work; at twenty we run two benches and the contest has five teams. Below six, book places on the public Neapolitan Pizza Class or the Pizza & Wine Evening instead.

It suits mixed groups. Nobody has to be good at cooking. The pizzaioli teach in English or Greek, so the bride's school friends from Thessaloniki and her colleagues from London share a bench. If someone is nervous about an activity, tell them it is mostly eating. Adults only: drinks packages and six-year-olds do not mix. Joint hen-and-stag sessions are welcome; the judging gets political.

The room: gallery, courtyard, stage

The ground-floor gallery is 90 square metres, white walls, tiled floor, whatever exhibition is up that month. It takes 100 standing or 40 seated and has a stage, a projector, a sound system and WiFi. That is where the workshop happens and where you stay afterwards if you book the floor.

The first floor is 30 square metres, 40 standing or 35 seated, for a smaller group that wants its own corner. The courtyard is 22 square metres, open air, for the first drink in summer. Book the gallery floor after the class and the space is yours into the night: the bride's worst haircuts on the projector, a playlist, a DJ.

Food, drinks and dietary

The pizza is Neapolitan. Type 00 flour, 72-hour fermentation, San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte, Parmigiano Reggiano, fresh basil. The house pizzas are named after art movements; the Rinascita is the classic, the Barocca has burrata. You will learn enough to make a Rinascita at home and fail at the Barocca.

Drinks are an add-on. The package covers wine, beer and cocktails, priced per head. You cannot bring your own drinks, including the prosecco in someone's handbag. You can bring your own cake at no charge, or order dessert from us. Vegan toppings are always on the bench. Gluten-free dough needs 48 hours' notice. The kitchen uses wheat, dairy and nuts, so we cannot promise zero cross-contact. Send dietary needs with the booking.

Practical: getting there, timing, what to wear

Persefonis 7, Kerameikos, Athens 118 54. Kerameikos metro on Line 3 is a short walk; Thiseio on Line 1 also works. Line 3 is the airport line, which matters for a group landing on Friday afternoon with suitcases. Parking in the area is hard. Taxi or metro, and share the pin in the group chat.

Sessions run any day and time we agree, 2.5 hours. For groups flying in, a Saturday afternoon slot leaves both nights free. Sunday lunchtime is the gentler option for the day after. Weekday afternoons and Mondays are the easiest to get. Wear something that can get floury, hair tied back, closed shoes. Matching T-shirts are fine; sashes and veils get in the dough. We take photos and send them to the organiser the same day; anyone who wants to stay out of them tells the instructor.

Stag do Athens activities: is this too tame?

Fair question. A group searching for stag do Athens activities usually wants something with a winner. This has one. Teams, a clock, an oven at full heat and a judge who is about to get married and knows who to punish. It is competitive enough. Nobody stays polite in a pizza contest.

It also fixes the 18:00 problem. Most stag plans have a gap between afternoon and night when everyone is hungry and nothing is decided. Book the 18:00 slot, eat what you made, and walk out at 20:30 fed, with the bars of Kerameikos around the corner. Same for a hen party worried this is a cooking class: it is a contest with pizza, and the cooking is the excuse.

How it runs

0:00 – 0:20

Arrive, aprons, drinks

Find the gallery, pick a bench, apron on. If drinks are booked, the first round is poured now.

0:20 – 0:50

Dough lesson

The pizzaiolo explains the 72-hour dough and shows the stretch. Everyone opens a base, then a better one.

0:50 – 1:35

Your own pizza

Each guest tops and bakes their own pizza. Ninety seconds in the oven, eaten standing up, Napoli style.

1:35 – 2:10

The contest

Teams build their contest pizza against the clock. The oven bakes them in order and the bride or groom judges.

2:10 – 2:30

Long table

Everyone sits, finishes eating, dessert if booked, photos. If you have the gallery floor, nothing ends here.

Questions

Can we bring our own drinks?

No. Drinks are served by us, as the wine, beer and cocktail package or ordered on the day. Cake is different: bring your own at no charge, or order dessert from us. Tell us when you book so there is fridge space.

Is it adults only?

Yes, for hen and stag parties. The private workshop takes children from six on other occasions, with easier toppings and a shorter programme, but not alongside a drinks package. Bring the flower girl to a Sunday class instead.

Do we need to know how to cook?

No. The pizzaioli show every step and stay at the bench. The dough has done most of the work over 72 hours before you arrive. The usual result is one slightly odd pizza and one you would pay for.

What if someone in the group is vegan or gluten-free?

Vegan toppings are always available. Gluten-free dough needs 48 hours' notice. The kitchen uses wheat, dairy and nuts, so we cannot guarantee zero cross-contact for a serious allergy. Send the list with the booking.

What happens if we have to cancel?

The 30% deposit is refunded in full up to 7 days before. Between 7 days and 72 hours we move it once to another date. Inside 72 hours it is kept. Weddings get postponed; talk to us early.

Can we stay after the workshop?

Yes, if you book the gallery floor. The space is yours into the evening with the sound system, projector and current exhibition. Add a playlist or a DJ. The restaurant serves until 01:00.
